Inventor Joseph Dixon moved his crucible factory from Salem, Massachusetts to this location in 1847. Here he produced a variety of products including pencils, crayons and graphite stove polish. Other products included a steel-making process and fast-color dyes for cotton fabrics. Dixon also invented a photolithography process that was the precursor to modern photography.

The complex was turned into residences in the mid-1980s, and preserved much of its industrial architecture including smokestacks, exposed brick and ductwork, large windows, high ceilings and terra cotta facades. It was remodeled in a style that is often called ‘Moderne.’ The complex has a small museum with artifacts from the company’s history in the building’s lobby.
