Low levels of physical activity, high sedentary behaviour and declining health-related fitness levels are worldwide problems. The widely publicised and adopted ‘Daily Mile’ physical activity intervention is aimed at breaking up sedentary time, and improving children’s physical fitness and body composition and it has anecdotally been reported to have numerous additional benefits such as improved concentration levels.
The Connection Between Active Miles and Overall Well-Being
To test the efficacy of the Daily Mile, a quasi-experimental repeated measures study was conducted in two primary schools with the intention to introduce the Daily Mile and one school which did not intend to implement the Daily Mile. Participating pupils were assessed at baseline and at a follow-up assessment. Outcomes included accelerometer-measured daily MVPA and sedentary behaviour, 20-m shuttle run fitness test performance and adiposity measured by skinfolds.
The Daily Mile was associated with a significant increase in MVPA and a reduction in sedentary behaviour in the experimental schools. However, some teachers expressed concerns about the impact on their classroom teaching, with a few noting that the Daily Mile could lead to distractions and disruption during lessons. It was also identified that teachers may have to adapt the Daily Mile to the facilities available at their schools, such as using indoor space when the outdoor running surface is unsuitable due to weather conditions.
