What Does A Deck/Patio Builder Do?

A deck/patio builder takes the design specifications proposed by a homeowner and constructs decks, patios, or any related structures using lumber, masonry, etc.

Typically, this job pays well due to the specialized training needed in order to build such structures. This person will be responsible for receiving an initial concept drawn up by a client and then executing on that plan from start to finish.

The deck/patio builder must also have experience with choosing materials best suited for the type of structure they are constructing in addition to making sure all building codes are followed during construction. The knowledge of how these aspects interact is necessary in order to make decisions on what material is best used for each situation. In particular, if weather conditions like the amount of moisture in the soil will affect how a given construction material reacts together, this person must know to use a different material.

Once the deck/patio builder has the plans and knows what materials to use, they perform all necessary tasks from cutting wood for beams to digging footings and fill dirt into place. This job is often outsourced so the owner of the business can focus on more design oriented aspects of their work. For example, if someone were constructing an above ground pool or spa they would need to determine if it needed support along its sides or bottom for safety reasons as well as choose colors that go together aesthetically knowing they are permanent fixtures.

A deck/patio builder may also be known as a carpenter, mason, contractor or home builder. Whatever the title a deck/patio builder must possess knowledge of what building codes to use based on the type of structure they are creating and also how to follow those rules in order to receive a clean inspection from licensing authorities.

The demand for this job is higher than many other construction professions due to the specialized training needed to do it well. The deck/patio builder should be prepared with all necessary tools including various types of saws as well as ladders, scaffolding, etc. This person needs a clean driving record so when building high they can drive safely without putting themselves at risk or others around them.
